标题: proposed free vps service [打印本页] 作者: domin 时间: 2011-2-5 05:44 标题: proposed free vps service I would like to see if anyone would be interested in such free vps service.
free vps service is provided for users meet the following requirements:
1. are not vps/*nix newbies. (experts prefer)
2. would actually use the service. (anything, prefer hosting personal websites, but no abuse content).
3. able to provide valuable feedbacks regularly. (including but not limited to security, network, feature, configuration, hardware...)
service will remain free as long the user continue to meet the above requirements.
the purpose of this is to gather valuable feedbacks so we can improve our service.
users will also have the opportunity to use the New/BETA features developed.
we did provide similar service to existing clients before for similar purpose but weren't able to obtain enough feedbacks, so this time this is for general public users, we will choose participants very carefully.
any ideas or suggestion will be appreciated.
Tired of getting through my feedback to various providers, I am more than happy to receive a service where real persons are listening and improving over time.
Security can be a major concern. Troubleshooting kernel panics, network outages, hard drive failures, and all these annoying technical glitches proves a time-consuming challenge to not only customers but service providers as well.
What I am interested about: the BGP mix (if not single-homed), tech spec (capabilities & available resources).
we don't run a BGP mix now, but are planning to very soon.
we have multiple uplinks to HE and have BGP access to their router for nullrouting, etc.
we have multiple server cabinets in Portland, Pittock bldg, and we have direct access to servers, DC, and ISP.
currently we are more concerning about security, and would love to have people on board that can provide feedback on that, should I count you on?

Great news from a reputable hosting provider!
I believe that consistent performance on a shared platform is always difficult to maintain. I'm curious about how will you operate and on which platform to operate on, you are in quite a large scale IMO.
Security/Server monitoring should be a very important factor to take care of. Raid array of at least Raid-1 should be an essential part, and for general server hardening, a tutorial will be just fine. Centralized server monitoring is a preferable choice, like munin, monitoring should be at least for the hardware node and for the VPS if your client accepts to do so. The monitoring function of SolusVM do have problems. And I'd love to see some backup slots available.
Personally, I don't think temporarily saturation in network connectivity can affect a popular site that much, a moderately good network is enough.
Finally I want to know if the control panel is self-made or commercial ones like SolusVM?
we utilize raid10 on all of the hardware nodes as well as remote backups.
regarding security I was referring to network layer i don't really want to go over in the public, some of you guys probably know what i'm talking about. Yes, I know. as a lot of us know a Virtual Private Server is not that "Private" at all if you know what i'm referring to "Network Security".

What spec of VPS will you give out and how can I get it?
The free VPS approach doesn't work for most providers for a reason. To name a few:
1. It's hard to give valuable technical suggestions without certain access to the host node.
2. Truth is people only wants the free VPS, the rest is BS. So what exactly you don't get from clients' tickets but from here?
3. The only good thing is you can throw anything at these free riders. But time is money too. When it comes to a point when the problems you create (or the time requires to cooperate with you to figure out the problems) outweighs the free resources you give, good ppl (whose time probably worths more) would rather not to bother. So you end up with a server loaded with useless leaches, again.
4. The way I see it, this only works when you are really good at your stuff and know what you're doing. But then again why do you need to ask from anybody else, other than your own paying clients? 1. right, but feedbacks from users are still valuable even though they don't have access to the node. i can't give them access to the node itself anyway, right?
2. unfortunately most of our existing clients are newbies on VPS.
3. you are right if i'm offering this in a large scale. i'm only looking for ~10 people. i'm glad those who signed up knows their stuff judging from their previous posts.
4. see #2.
since there are some unleashed dogs running around and i've got a good number of people signed up already.
so i'm gonna close the thread now.
however if anyone still interested and meet the requirements, don't reply here, shoot me a PM instead in English OR Chinese.
